Stargazing in UAE’s Al Quaa Desert Offers Rare Milky Way Views

Al Quaa Desert: A Stargazer’s Paradise

Amidst the rapid urbanization and dazzling lights of the United Arab Emirates, the Al Quaa Desert stands as a serene sanctuary for those seeking the celestial wonders of the night sky. Known as one of the darkest locations in the country, this desert offers a rare opportunity to witness the Milky Way in all its glory, far removed from the luminous distractions of city life.

A Journey Back in Time

The history of navigating by the stars is rich in the Arabian Peninsula, where once, caravans relied on the night sky for guidance across the vast and shifting sands. Today, the Dubai Astronomy Group is reviving this ancient connection by organizing nighttime excursions into the Al Quaa Desert, encouraging participants to reconnect with the cosmos.

Reaching the Heart of Darkness

Located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Abu Dhabi, the journey to Al Quaa is an adventure in itself. Travelers take the major highway towards Al Ain, followed by a detour onto less-traveled roads that lead into the heart of the desert. The final stretch along Razeen Road is marked by an automated gate, opening to an unpaved path that plunges into the deep, unlit expanse of the desert, away from the bustling city lights.

A Night of Celestial Wonders

On a recent weekend in May, the desert hosted a unique gathering. Families and individuals, speaking languages ranging from Arabic to English and Russian, assembled under the stars. As the half-moon dipped below the horizon, the Milky Way revealed itself—a faint, cloud-like band stretching across the sky, visible to the naked eye.

Guided by Sheeraz Awan, general manager of the Dubai Astronomy Group, participants were treated to a celestial tour. Using a laser pointer, Awan illuminated the constellations, drawing gasps and exclamations from the crowd. The occasional meteor streaking through the sky added to the awe-inspiring experience.

Connecting with the Cosmos

For many, the night was an opportunity to engage in an activity that transcends time. As Awan remarked, stargazing connects us to a tradition practiced since ancient times. Attendees gathered around telescopes for a closer look at individual stars, while others experimented with long-exposure photography on their mobile phones, capturing the galaxy’s gleaming expanse overhead.

Modern Reflections on Ancient Practices

As the night wore on and temperatures dropped, participants gradually returned to their vehicles, leaving behind the tranquil darkness for the illuminated highways of the UAE. Yet, the experience served as a poignant reminder of humanity’s enduring fascination with the stars—a practice that continues to inspire wonder and reflection in our modern world.
