The USS Abraham Lincoln, one of the largest and most formidable aircraft carriers in the United States Navy, is scheduled to make a significant port call near Pattaya, Thailand. This deployment is expected to bring an influx of over 5,000 American service members to the coastal city, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife.
The Lincoln, recently seen passing Singapore, has been on an extended mission in the Middle East, participating in operations against Iran. With its return journey to the United States underway, the ship is slated to dock in Chonburi province. According to Thai officials, this event promises to provide a much-needed economic uplift to Pattaya, a city that has faced a downturn in tourism amid global challenges.
Boost to Local Economy and Tourism
Pattaya’s Mayor, Poramet Ngampichet, expressed optimism about the economic benefits that the visit of American service personnel will bring. “This is an opportunity for Pattaya to be recognized as a premier vacation destination,” Poramet stated. With the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., a destroyer, docking at a separate port, the Mayor is hopeful that future visits will become a norm, whether for military exercises or leisure.
The timing of the visit is particularly pertinent as international tourism has seen a decline, exacerbated by escalating fuel prices linked to ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts. The presence of the U.S. military is anticipated to provide a temporary but significant boost to local businesses.
Ensuring Safety and Fair Practices
While the arrival of the U.S. military personnel is welcomed, Thai authorities, including city police Chief Anek Srathongyoo, are taking precautions to ensure safety and order. Local businesses have been cautioned against inflating prices for the visiting servicemen. Moreover, an increased police presence will be deployed in popular areas such as Pattaya Beach and the bustling Walking Street to maintain security.
Poramet has also addressed the restrictions placed on recreational activities for the service members, banning activities such as parasailing to ensure their safety during the visit.
Mixed Reactions from Local Businesses
The reaction from local business owners has been mixed. While some, like a bar owner near the beach, have shown enthusiasm, welcoming the service members with banners, others remain skeptical about the economic impact. Somkiet Noree, who owns a souvenir shop, expressed uncertainty. “Pattaya is quiet now. I hope the visitors will spend money here,” he remarked.
Similarly, Bualuang Ponok, an employee at a bar on Walking Street, mentioned past experiences with American servicemen. “They said 5,000 are coming, but how many will actually visit us?” she questioned, highlighting the uncertainty faced by local businesses.

The USS Abraham Lincoln’s extended deployment in the Middle East was a strategic element of U.S. efforts to stabilize the region. Its operations saw a record-breaking duration at sea, exceeding 250 days. The prolonged mission raised concerns about the mental well-being and resource shortages among the crew, which U.S. President Donald Trump later downplayed.
With the USS George Washington taking over operations in the Middle East, the Lincoln is expected to return to the U.S. after its Thai port visit. Thai officials have expressed a desire for continued collaboration and future visits as the city seeks to bolster its international image.
