Abu Dhabi witnessed a significant advancement in its transportation infrastructure as the first passenger service of the Etihad Rail network completed its maiden journey from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi. This development marks a pivotal chapter in the UAE’s national transport landscape, promising enhanced connectivity and efficiency.
Celebrating a Landmark Journey
The preliminary train departed from Fujairah Station, arriving at Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi amidst a celebratory atmosphere. Passengers on board expressed immense pride in participating in this historic journey, citing the train’s speed, comfort, and reliability as key highlights. This event not only underscores the technological advancements in the UAE but also signifies a commitment to modernizing public transport.
Expansion Plans and Future Connectivity
The launch of the Etihad Rail passenger service is just the beginning of an ambitious expansion plan. Starting September 30, the service will extend to major cities including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Dhaid, and Fujairah. By December 2026, connections to Al Dhafra regional stations will be operational, with further extension to Sharjah anticipated by March 2027. This phased expansion aims to integrate the rail network with urban developments across the UAE.
Infrastructure and Capacity
Established in 2009, Etihad Rail was tasked with developing a comprehensive national rail network. Spanning over 900 kilometers, it strategically links cities, ports, and industrial zones across the nation. The trains, capable of accommodating up to 400 passengers per trip, aim to cater to approximately 10 million passengers annually once fully operational. The journey between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah takes around 105 minutes, with trains reaching speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour.
Service Features and Passenger Experience
Etihad Rail offers two distinct classes of travel: ‘Comfort Class’ and ‘Premium Class’. Both classes are designed to provide a high-quality travel experience with features such as reserved seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, charging ports for electronic devices, ample luggage space, and multiple ticketing options. Introductory fares for the Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route are set at AED 55 for Comfort Class and AED 120 for Premium Class, making it accessible for a wide range of passengers.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The development of the Etihad Rail network is a key component of the UAE’s ‘Fifty Projects’, aimed at fostering economic diversification and promoting sustainable development. By enhancing supply chain efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, the rail network supports the nation’s goals of reducing its environmental footprint while bolstering economic growth.
As the UAE continues to invest in its infrastructure, the successful launch of the Etihad Rail passenger service represents a significant step forward in the country’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in public transportation.
